‘No Comment’ from Sony on Purported PlayStation Phone Pix

Sony Computer Entertainment first said that the purportedly leaked images of a long-rumored PlayStation Phone — published last night by tech blog Engadget — were “definitely false,” before modifying its stance to “no comment” (via Wired). Nevertheless, Engadget today adds more details about a device which it maintains is “most definitely real.” The combination gaming handheld/smartphone, Engadget says, would likely run on the Android operating system, and feature a Sony Marketplace that enables users to purchase digital games. Save a slot for microSD cards, there appears to be no physical media support on the prototype device. The phone, Engadget reports, would tout 1 GB of solid-state storage; that capacity seems quite low when compared to Apple’s iPhone 4, which starts at 16 GB. Engadget, citing sources “closely connected to the project,” speculates that Sony is readying the PlayStation Phone for a 2011 launch.
